All the Mercury and Gemini missions were flown on modified ICBMs, like the Redstone Atlas and Titan II rockets. The Saturn Rockets of Apollo were the first ones that were built from scratch with man flight in mind, and these were designed and built by Verner von Braun, the guy behind the v2 rockets. When SpaceX first got started, they didn’t have nuclear weapons and Nazis to fall back on, they just had Elon Musk and maracas. Today they’re the most successful private space launch company…
